What is spiritual warfare?

o       Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood (other people), but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of the dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

o       It is war in the spirit world – a world you cannot see with your eyes, but is clearly real.

o       We are in a spiritual war whether you want to believe it or not.   Satan is not going to stop his advances just because we choose to deny he is real or because we are too weak to pick up our spiritual weapons.  The war continues.   Whether you win or not is your decision.

 24

o       (Joshua 23:6-13)  God told the Israelites to drive out the tribes (enemy), and He promised to help them win their battles as long as they obeyed Him.

 25

o       Israel had to fight enemy tribes to possess the land.  Christians today must fight our spiritual enemy.   The difference is that Israel fought against human enemies and we struggle against “principalities and powers of the air” (Satan and his demons).  (Ephesians 6:12)

o       We fight this battle on two fronts:  (1)  inside our own hearts  (2)  in our homes, churches, communities, cities, and countries.

Story Example:   There was a doctor working in Africa on a mission site.  He was walking through the forest alone one night when he saw a man beaten by two men.  He went to the man and cleaned his wounds, then went on his way to his camp in the woods.   Two days later, one of the men the doctor had seen earlier told him that he and his friends had gone into the forest to rob him at his camp.  But, when they arrived they saw 26 guards standing around his camp, and they gave up their plans to rob him.

When the doctor returned to the US, he gave a presentation for missions at a small church.  As he told this story, a church member in the back of the church stood up.  He said, “Sir, can you tell me the date when that event happened.? After the doctor responded, the church member said, “I remember that day.  I was cutting grass, and the Lord prompted me to call the men at the church to pray for a missionary in Africa that was in danger.  I wonder if all the men that prayed that day would please stand up.”  Everyone in the church was silent as 26 men of God, intercessors, stood to their feet.   WOW!  God answers intercessory prayers.

That is how God works.   We can win spiritual battles against the enemy, when we obey the Holy Spirit calling.

Thought Questions:

1)     Who is my enemy?  Where is he now?

2)     What does he want?  Why?

3)     What is Satan’s plan?  Does he have power in my life?

4)     Who is more powerful satan or God?  How do I know?

5)     What is spiritual warfare?                                                   26

Discussion Questions:

1)     Discuss how ignoring satan can get you into spiritual trouble.  If you pretend he isn’t there, he won’t bother you, right?

2)     How can remembering satan is God’s defeated enemy help us in our everyday lives?

3)     How can being BUSY be a tool for satan?
